Guests can go through this self-guided exploration with an audio guide and a digital map. There are windows on each of the four walls in this room, including on the ceiling and on the floor. This conservatory is down the hall from Winchester's bedroom. Although there are theories that the construction went on for 24 hours a day, Boehme said that is fiction. It is true, however, that the remodeling of the house went on for decades.
The Abandoned 'Ghost Mansion' of Northern Italy
Suddenly, Sarah Winchester was in possession of a $20 million fortune (equivalent to about $500 million in the present day) as well as a 50 percent stake in the Winchester Arms company. Though she never took up a position in the business, her stake left her with a continuous income of $1,000 a day (or about $26,000 a day in 2019 dollars). By some accounts, Sarah Winchester never quite recovered from the death of her infant daughter. Though she and William remained married, Sarah became increasingly distressed, often over the source of the company’s — and thus her own — wealth. In her eyes, the Winchester family business profited from death, something she couldn’t cope with.

Prepare to uncover hidden secrets and unlock doors to the oldest sections of the home. This self guided tour that allows you to walk the halls at your own pace in the dark with a flashlight. Among the secrets Sarah took to her grave was why she insisted that so many things relate to the number 13. The Winchester House has many 13-paned windows and 13-paneled ceilings, as well as 13-step stairways. But the pièce de résistance might be the house's 13th bathroom, which contains 13 windows of its own.
Experiences
There’s light flowing in from occasional windows, but even so, it’s hard to orient yourself in space as the walls close in. The Guided Mansion Tour features the larger rooms in the mansion and guests will be able to experience the house like never before. During the one-hour adventure, you will see 110 rooms in the mansion, as well as the 3rd and 4th floors. The Mansion Tour ticket also includes access to the Victorian Gardens. Unlock the secrets of the Winchester Mystery House and learn about Sarah Winchester’s vast Estate with all-new audio and content. Instead of building a university or a library, Sarah Winchester built a counter-legend to the thousands of American gunslinger stories.
There were 13 bathrooms, 13 windows in the last bathroom built, and 13 hooks in the above mentioned séance room. There were also 13 parts to her will, which she had to sign 13 times. In addition to making these strange modifications, she made quite a few additions for herself. Luxury fixtures adorned the mansion, including parquet flooring, crystal chandeliers, gilded doorways, and even stained glass windows handcrafted by Tiffany & Co’s first design director Louis Comfort Tiffany. Construction lasted for thirty-eight years on the Winchester Mystery House, one of North America’s most unusual and eccentric homes located in the heart of San Jose, California. Through the 160-room labyrinth-style mansion built by Sarah Pardee Winchester, there are many beautiful and extraordinary examples of the Queen-Anne Victorian Style architecture.

If they displease or terrify, we brood or fuss over them for a while, then revise them to make them manageable, or we plaster over them and suppress them, or refashion them into another idea. The true nature of Winchester’s motivations is likely to remain a mystery. But as the video tour points out, the house she built was not only bizarre—it was innovative. Winchester loved to garden, so the conservatory featured an indoor watering system and wooden floorboards that could be lifted up to water plants resting below. A popular tourist attraction, the house, along with many other cultural institutions in the United States, has closed to help curb the spread of coronavirus.

After her husband passed away, a psychic told her that to evade the spirits, she would have to move out west, buy a home, and build nonstop. To avoid them, she allegedly slept in a different bedroom every night and took labyrinthine paths through her own home. Throughout the house, you can find staircases that lead to nowhere, doors that open onto walls, and rooms with windows on the floor. The bizarre design elements feed into the theory that Winchester was trying to trap and confuse the ghosts that haunted her, but Boehme said there's a more realistic explanation. Winchester designed the home with no blueprints and no formal design experience. These design oddities may have been mistakes or a simple change of mind.

According to Boehme, Winchester had a passion for remodeling and building homes after she helped construct one back in Connecticut. Boehme said the remodels were nothing but a passion project for Winchester. Those looking to explore even more of the beautiful but bizarre home of Sarah Winchester should book the Mansion Tour and spend more time in the gardens and gift shop. I must have been hoping that the house would yield up its secret to me. At first glance I was deflated, for the unusual reason that from the outside, the house wasn’t entirely weird.
San Jose house renovation
Despite the Winchester Mystery House's cheerful appearance, this massive California mansion's history is edged with tragedy, mystery ... Naturally, it has inspired a chilling horror movie, Winchester, which opens in theaters today. But before you go to the movie theater, wander through the curious past of one of America's most infamous homes. In the Daisy Bedroom—which is on the original tour—Winchester rang a bell to summon her servants, who couldn’t find her in the chaos.
We depend on ad revenue to craft and curate stories about the world’s hidden wonders. Consider supporting our work by becoming a member for as little as $5 a month. Time magazine once named the Winchester house one of the most haunted places in the world. The house opened for tours just five months after she passed away.
Filming for the movie took place at the actual Winchester Mystery House. Throughout the years-long construction of the Winchester Mystery House, Sarah Winchester would never confirm that she was building a haunted house. Winchester hired carpenters to work around the clock, expanding the small house into a seven-story mansion. Due to the lack of a plan and the presence of an architect, the house was constructed haphazardly; rooms were added onto exterior walls resulting in windows overlooking other rooms. Multiple staircases would be added, all with different sized risers, giving each staircase a distorted look.
They welcomed a daughter, their only child, four years later; sadly, she only lived six weeks. After William died of tuberculosis in 1881, his share of Winchester Repeating Arms Co.—roughly 50 percent, which was valued at approximately $20 million at the time, the L.A. She put the money towards an endowment that funded the Winchester Chest Clinic at New Haven Yale Hospital (it's still there today) and a move west to be closer to her relatives. She settled in San Jose, California, where the dry climate proved beneficial for her rheumatoid arthritis. According to the Los Angeles Times, she and her late husband had overseen the building of their former residence in New Haven, Connecticut together. "I think Sarah was trying to repeat that experience by doing something they both loved," said Janan Boehme, a historian who's worked at the Winchester Mystery House for almost 40 years.
An alternate theory on the Winchester House's perplexing design declares that Sarah was creating a puzzle full of encryptions inspired by the work of English philosopher Francis Bacon. There's speculation that clues to the house's true meaning are hidden in the ballroom, the Shakespeare windows, and the iron gates. This theory suggests that Sarah was a member of a mystic society like the Rosicrucians, or a secret society like the Freemasons—or possibly both. Though the house has a reputation as a dim warren, its estimated 10,000 panes of glass reflect Winchester’s desire for natural light. At one point, an outdoor patio was enclosed, so she had a skylight installed in its floor to pull light from above into the newly shrouded room below.
To further complicate matters, William’s father Oliver died in 1880, leaving the company in the hands of his only son. Then, just a year later, William himself suddenly fell ill and died from tuberculosis, leaving everything to Sarah. Born in New Haven, Connecticut to upper-class parents around 1840, Sarah Lockwood Pardee enjoyed the spoils of a luxurious life. Her father, Leonard Pardee, was a successful carriage manufacturer, and her mother was popular in the upper echelons of New Haven’s society.

Four years into the marriage, Sarah bore a daughter named Annie Pardee Winchester. Between the massive sales and increasing popularity, the Winchester family amassed quite a fortune — a fortune that would one day become the foundation of Sarah Winchester’s strange obsession. To make matters easier, the Pardee family was acquainted with several other affluent families through their church. By the time Sarah was of age to marry, her parents already had someone in mind — a man who would ensure their daughter would be taken care of for her entire life. Over the past two years, the Winchester Mystery House has completed restoration projects on two of the oldest rooms in Sarah Winchester’s San Jose mansion.
Building The Winchester Mansion
Even 95 years after her death, it seemed that Sarah Winchester’s house was still holding on to some secrets. After the house was emptied, a local investor purchased the home for a cool $135,000. Just five months after Sarah Winchester died, the Winchester Mystery House was opened to the public for tours. Out of the 13 bathrooms in the home, only one was functional, in an effort to confuse any ghosts wishing to haunt a spigot.
Designing Immersive Gatherings With Zach Morris of Third Rail Projects
There are many conspiracy theories surrounding the mansion, but the most popular lore is that Winchester went to a spiritualist and learned that she was being haunted by spirits who died at the hands of the Winchester gun company. Because she was living off the gun company's fortune, the spiritualist told her to move to California and build a home that would appease and trap the ghosts who follow her. Legend has it that the home's labyrinth of rooms within rooms, interior-facing windows, doors that opened to walls, and stairs leading to nowhere were all part of a grand plan to "confuse" the spirits of the dead. The Winchester Mystery House was constructed mostly of wood as was preferred by Mrs. Winchester. Faux grain and stains were used to cover the wood as Sarah disliked the look. The house is built using a free foundation that saved it from collapsing from the two largest earthquakes in 1909 and 1989.
Company
Over repeated visits, I came to think that if a mind were a house, it would probably look like this. When I heard her ghost story from a friend in graduate school, I was enthralled. Eventually, Winchester became the muse for my book on the history of the American gun industry and culture.

'Ghost Files' Returning to the Winchester Mystery House For Special Episode.
The great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 damaged the Winchester mansion all the way out in San Jose. After seeing the damage, Boehme said Winchester decided to remove the top few floors because it was too dangerous. Winchester made charitable donations, certainly, and if she had wanted to, she could have become a philanthropist of greater renown. But the fact remains that she chose to convert a vast portion of her rifle fortune into a monstrous, distorted home; so we can now wander through her rooms imagining how one life affects others.
The Winchester Mystery House is offering guests unprecedented access to the most beautiful and bizarre Victorian Mansion. Enjoy unlimited virtual access in 360° and go behind-the-ropes. Overcome with grief in the wake of her husband's death from tuberculosis in 1881, folklore states that Sarah sought out a spiritualist who could commune with the dead. While she was presumably looking for solace or closure, she was instead given a chilling warning.
A Brief History of Scent With Saskia Wilson-Brown
For the most part, no one was permitted even to photograph her. “There’s a story about Teddy Roosevelt making an appearance in San Jose and wanting an audience with the Winchester widow,” says Magnuson. “He knocked on the front door and was not even let in.” Her eccentricity and the ghost stories—not to mention the scandal of a woman living autonomous and alone—have always been amplified in the house’s history. More striking, though, is the extraordinary artistic freedom she exercised in creating it, as well as the lengths to which today’s staff must go to keep the house intact and open.
But while the house remains a popular destination, its fascinating owner Sarah Winchester is often an afterthought. Sarah Winchester’s main bedroom in the Winchester Mystery House is a favorite stop on the Mansion Tour. From the original Luncrusta Walton Wallcovering, to the ornate ceilings perfectly preserved after nearly 97 years of tours.

But as Katie Dowd of SFGate points out, there is “scant proof” for this theory. Winchester could have been engaging in an eccentric brand of philanthropy, as she built her home during an economic depression, and the continuous construction project provided jobs for locals. When she died, in fact, the heiress left most of her money to charity. These spirits are reportedly what called Winchester to make so many illogical additions to the home.
However, Oliver had also developed an interest in the firearms business, and after taking control of the Volcanic Arms Company, he established the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1866. William soon sold his interest in the shirt company and became secretary of Winchester Repeating Arms. Janan Boehme, the house's longtime historian, believes there's a logical explanation for the continual, maze-like construction Sarah commissioned during the second half of her life. Since 1923, many guests and employees have experienced strange phenomena while inside Sarah Winchester’s beautiful mansion. We have been listed on plenty of “world’s most haunted places” lists, but we encourage you to come and find out for yourself.
Boehme finds that the legend has little power to explain Winchester’s unusual construction ideas. “A lot of stories were told about her way before she died, even. She really wouldn’t engage or talk to the press because they said such bad things about her.” During her lifetime, her silence likely fed all sorts of rumors. Sarah Winchester, widow of William Winchester, heir to the Winchester Arms fortune, moved from New Haven Conn, to San Jose, Ca., in 1884, after the deaths of both her baby daughter and husband.

Learn how to make a budget and take control of your finances with this eight-week newsletter course. WASHINGTON – Today, the Full Committee met to consider the Fiscal Year 2024 bill for the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Subcommittee. This may be the area in which “infrastructure” is defined most in social terms. Out-of-pocket costs for insulin would be capped at $35 for a 30-day supply, and new mothers receiving Medicaid couldn’t be denied benefits for 12 months after they give birth. Conservatives worked assiduously during the Trump years to emasculate NASA’s crucial work in this area, arguing that the agency should concentrate solely on space exploration. This was merely part of the Trump ethos of undermining any research that might harm Republican patrons in the fossil fuel industry.
What you need to know about Newsom’s plan to offset California’s $31.5-billion deficit
About $55 billion would go to expanding access to clean drinking water. Earlier in the week, on Oct. 24-25, a subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved 17 bills that aim to support the deployment of nuclear energy and hydropower and bolster grid reliability, sending the bills to the full committee. And the proposed IRA rescissions "would result in unacceptable harm to clean energy and energy efficiency initiatives that lower energy costs and critical investments in rural America," the statement added. But the legislation would slash funding for the DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, as well as the office overseeing carbon capture research and deployment. It also called to reduce money for the DOE's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, which was created and initially funded through the bipartisan infrastructure law of 2021.
New York News
The iron flow batteries being tested by the publicly owned electric utility are a big deal, Canary Media’s Julian Spector writes — in part because they could help the utility meet its goal of reaching 100% clean energy by 2030. In other fire news, Alex explained how efforts to fight one of California’s largest fires this year were nearly derailed by a mixup of diesel fuel and gasoline. The Times’ Grace Toohey, meanwhile, wrote about the microgrid that kept the lights on in Del Norte County during that fire — although it was powered by diesel-fueled generators, not clean energy.
Newsom and Democratic lawmakers remain divided on infrastructure plan
Over the course of the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of Los Angeles residents and businesses accumulated $827 million in unpaid bills, Garcetti said. The "Help Is On The Way" program began providing $275 million in automatic credits to unpaid residential and commercial Department of Water and Power customers at the start of the year, and those credits will be completed by the end of the month. The Conservatives ratified their Rwanda policy into law, but voters here weren't hugely enthused by that either, with one member of the audience tonight proclaiming they care much more about housing and the environment. But five years on, polling by Sky News found that since then, the number of people saying they "almost never" trust the British government to place the needs of the nation above the interests of their own party has nearly doubled - from 26% to 49%. The 2 May local elections will see more than 2,600 seats at stake across 107 English councils. Now, as leader of a minority government, his fate may be hanging on just one vote - that of a former SNP leadership rival.
Column: Gov. Abbott says Texas can solve California’s port logjam. As usual, he’s blowing smoke
The White House says California should expect $25.3 billion for highways and $4.2 billion for bridge replacement and repairs over five years. The state can also bid for money from the $28.5-billion investment fund for economically significant bridges and other physical projects. The text of the bill, before the adoption of amendments in full committee, is here.
Biden officials indefinitely postpone ban on menthol cigarettes amid election-year pushback
It also reverses Newsom’s plan to spend $450 million from the Safety Net Reserve, an account created to shore up funding for programs such as CalWorks and Medi-Cal during a downturn. Conservationists are suing the Biden administration for failing to get Cliven Bundy’s cattle off of critical desert tortoise habitat on public lands in Nevada, and for allowing large solar farms to threaten tortoises too. You may recall that federal agents tried to round up Bundy’s illegally grazing cows in 2014, only to back off when threatened with armed confrontation by Bundy’s supporters, as Colton Lochhead notes in his story on the lawsuit for the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
It grants $500 million to the Internal Revenue Service to combat tax evasion, which is chiefly a problem among rich Americans. The bill also provides $200 million for the Appalachian Regional Commission, including $10 million for Congressman Rogers' Appalachian Broadband Initiative, as well as $16 million for infrastructure improvements in Central Appalachian and $65 million for the POWER initiative. Congresswoman DeLauro’s full remarks as prepared for delivery are here. Congress is using the money to move the bureau to more forward-looking water policy, particularly on water recycling and employing nature-based solutions, such as using tools that mimic nature to conserve water.
This is the latest example of a community seeking to block clean energy infrastructure that’s badly needed to replace fossil fuels but can be understandably scary — a topic I’ve been covering through Repowering the West. And it’s always worth keeping in mind that lithium-ion batteries, although needed to store solar power for the evening, can lead to environmental damage by spurring demand for lithium. It’s one of many metals that could be affected by a new Biden administration proposal to reform mining on public lands. Miners would have to pay royalties for the first time, and more robust tribal consultation would be required, per Hannah Northey at E&E News. Fresh off electing a new speaker, the US House of Representatives on Oct. 26 passed a fiscal year 2024 energy and water spending bill that would reduce funding for some clean energy-focused offices at the US Energy Department and claw back money for Inflation Reduction Act climate programs.

Hill leaders announce deal to unlock final spending bills - Roll Call
Hill leaders announce deal to unlock final spending bills.
Once the president submits a budget proposal – which is supposed to happen (but often doesn’t) by the first Monday in February – the House and Senate start work on a budget resolution. This is a concurrent resolution, agreed to by both chambers but not presented to the president. While it doesn’t have the force of law, the budget resolution serves as an overall revenue and spending plan for the coming fiscal year. It guides lawmakers as they assemble the detailed appropriations bills. The new federal fiscal year begins on Oct. 1, and Congress hasn’t passed any of the dozen appropriations bills it’s supposed to enact every year. That raises the prospect of yet another forced shutdown of large chunks of the federal government – which, if it happens, would be the fourth in the past decade.
A farmer in California’s Imperial Valley suffered another courtroom defeat in his quest to shift control of the region’s Colorado River water rights — the largest such rights in the West — from the Imperial Irrigation District to landowning growers such as himself. And near the California-Oregon border, the federal government shouldn’t have sent any water to farms in the Klamath Basin last year, a judge has ruled, to better protect fish and tribal rights. This story was originally published in Boiling Point, a newsletter about climate change and the environment. He proposes also to reverse one of Trump’s most egregious environmental assaults, the opening of the treasured Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling.
With the local elections less than a week away, deputy political editor Sam Coates explains why they matter and what they might tell us about the upcoming general election. That, combined with the decision to pause the prescription of new puberty blockers to under-18s at at Scotland's only gender clinic, resulted in the Greens announcing they would have a vote on the future of the power-sharing deal. The Greens were angered at the SNP-led administration's recent decision to ditch a key climate change target. Pressure has been building on the SNP leader after he tore up the power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens - prompting a no-confidence motion in his leadership and a threatened knife-edge vote.
She added that people who have received automatic credits are still eligible for additional relief. The $275 million in debt relief was automatically applied to people's accounts, without them having to fill out paperwork or apply for the relief, officials said. In 2016, 70% of people here voted to leave the EU - one of the highest results in the country - and in the 2019 election, the constituency turned Tory for the first time since the Second World War. Ash Regan - the MSP who could decide the future of Humza Yousaf - has appeared to name her price for her support in next week's no-confidence vote.
The legislation would also claw back $150 million from fiscal year 2023 appropriations meant to supplement the DOE's existing loan guarantee program. The House bill supports domestic uranium enrichment capabilities, including for high-assay low enriched uranium, and would help advance small modular reactor and advanced reactor demonstration projects. The spending package also contains more than $200 million for the production of critical minerals.
The bill report, before the adoption of amendments in full Committee, is here. You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. Old dams, canals and other infrastructure will be upgraded with $3.2 billion over five years. Although that’s short of the $4.6 billion the bureau identified as needed over the next five years, it’s significantly more than its annual budget. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg declined to predict which projects might be selected for funding.
This is the fifth individual appropriations bill House Republicans have passed, the Senate has failed to pick up one. The Legislature’s $311.7-billion spending plan unveiled Monday was crafted after 120 public hearings over the last six months. The legislative budget plan increases funding for education, child care, public transit and Medi-Cal over levels Newsom proposed in his revised budget in May.
